A big influence into the style that I hope to create would be the Disney film Maleficent. I think that the lighting and overall feel of the movie stills I have researched are really nice and I think they have influenced me and what I am hoping to create in my own work. The smoke is interesting as it adds a sense of mystery to the piece and almost makes the atmosphere more fantasy-like which would relate well to my piece as its based on an old folk tale.

I think one of the most successful things within the image below is the light shining through the branches of the tree. I think this looks really dramatic and dark, the lighting is extremely important in scenes like this when trying to crate a dark and mysterious atmosphere. I think this can be achieved quite easily in my image as there is a conveniently placed tree in the corner of my set. I intend to place a triggered flash below the tree shining up through the branches. Also, if I used smoke it could also go through the tree making the light brighter and more blurry.

The colour palette of these images is mainly purples and blues, I think this again adds a sense of fantasy however, I think it also makes the images look quite dark.

The Images Below are paintings I found during researching the original story of ‘ Little Briar Rose’. This is where I found inspiration for my composition. All the paintings and images I found were the same scene of when the ‘Prince Charming’ is about to rescue the princess however, I decided I wanted to do it just before this happened, with the princess lying still covered in vines and dust.

What is a Tableau Viviant?

Tableau Viviant means the term, ‘living picture’ in the French language. It describes a group of suitably costumed actors or artists models, carefully posed and often lit theatrically. Throughout the duration, the people on display do not speak or move. Before photography was invented it was used to recreate scenes from famous paintings at parties. Participants would dress u, use props, appropriate backgrounds and poses to restage the original image. Although, tableau photography fell out of fashion with the rise of realism, and documentary
Photography became more popular as people wanted to see images of real life, real people and real places. In contemporary photography from the 1970s the tableau image has remained a good way for photographers to tell stories and recreate paintings in an innovative and creative way.

Photographic Tableau?

Jean- Francois Chevrier was the first to coin the term Tableau in relation to a form of art photography, which began in the 1970s and 1980s. The key characteristic of the contemporary photographic tableau according to Chevrier is:

• “They are designed and produced for the wall. Summoning a confrontational experience on the part of the spectator”. By this, Chevrier notes that the scale and size are of great importance if this image is to ‘hold the wall’ but size has another function; it distances you from the object. It makes you stand back and take it all in, this makes it really different from more conventional photographs that you just simply see in a magazine.

The recreation of famous scenes and paintings was a popular pastime. Today in the digital age new stories and narratives can be created with the revival of the tableau photograph.
